Microsoft Teams Phone – Telephony and Voice Services

In this course, you set up Microsoft Teams Phone as a phone system for your organisation. You choose the right PSTN connectivity, configure Direct Routing, dial plans, calling features, auto attendants and call queues, and implement emergency calling correctly. Finally, you monitor call quality and resolve typical faults.

Planning Teams Phone

  • Teams calling and Teams Phone compared, licensing for Teams Phone and resource accounts
  • Choosing PSTN connectivity: Microsoft Calling Plan, Operator Connect, Teams Phone Mobile and Direct Routing – individually or combined
  • Phone number types for users, audio conferencing and voice apps; acquiring and managing phone numbers
  • Planning the replacement of an existing phone system or of Skype for Business Server

Preparing network and call quality

  • Network requirements for real-time media and bandwidth planning
  • Implementing Quality of Service (QoS) for voice, video and screen sharing
  • Maintaining network topology with sites and subnets in the Teams Admin Center

Direct Routing

  • Architecture: certified Session Border Controller (SBC), SBC FQDN in a verified domain, public certificate, SIP over TLS, firewall rules
  • Connecting the SBC to the tenant, codecs and media bypass
  • Voice routing: PSTN usages, voice routes and voice routing policies, failover across multiple SBCs
  • Dial plans with normalisation rules, phone number translation
  • Overview of Survivable Branch Appliance and Local Media Optimization

Calling features and user configuration

  • Enabling users for Teams Phone, assigning phone numbers, calling and caller ID policies
  • Call forwarding, simultaneous ringing, call groups, call delegation, parking and retrieving calls, voicemail, busy on busy
  • Private line, multiple phone numbers per user, routing of unassigned phone numbers
  • Shared Calling: using a resource account’s phone number for users without their own number

Voice apps

  • Creating, licensing and assigning phone numbers to resource accounts
  • Auto attendants: business hours and holidays, menus with dial-pad or voice commands, directory search by name or extension
  • Call queues: agents, routing methods, presence-based routing, exception handling for overflow, timeout or no agents available
  • Looking ahead: Queues app with Teams Premium and Teams Phone Agent (currently in preview)

Emergency calling and devices

  • Emergency addresses and locations, dynamic emergency calling based on network identifiers such as subnets and Wi-Fi access points
  • Emergency call policies and security desk notification, emergency call routing policies for Direct Routing
  • Managing Teams-certified phones and phones in shared spaces, connecting existing SIP phones via the SIP Gateway

Operations, monitoring and troubleshooting

  • Administration in the Teams Admin Center and automation with the Microsoft Teams PowerShell module
  • Analysing individual calls in the Teams Admin Center, organisation-wide analysis with the Call Quality Dashboard (CQD)
  • Typical fault patterns: phone number assignment, routing, SBC connection, emergency calls and audio quality

Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 administrators, as well as telecommunications professionals migrating telephony to Teams or operating Teams Phone.

Experience administering Microsoft Teams and a basic knowledge of networking (IP, DNS, firewall) and PowerShell are required. A basic knowledge of telephony and SIP is helpful.

After the course you will be able to:

  • compare the PSTN connectivity options for Teams Phone and choose the right one for your sites
  • set up Direct Routing with a certified SBC, including voice routing and dial plans
  • configure users, phone numbers and calling features such as delegation, call groups and Shared Calling
  • build auto attendants and call queues
